Nisenan: bear, jom kapa

The bear carries the stories of the people. From the dancing of the gray pines to the gold of the poppies and raven bringing messages to families are the symbols embedded into this painting.

The words, jom kapa, means bear in Nisenan. With natural ochres from the earth, bear comes to walk the earth collecting stories of the ancestors. Mixing earth pigments with walnut oil, these are painted onto handmade and recycled papers over a wood surface.
